While obtaining her degree, Palmerton was a single working mother of three young kids. In 1986, Faye Palmerton was a 6th grade teacher at Portsmouth Elementary (now César Chávez) School in North Portland. It was an area well known for high levels of gang activity. Faye remembers standing at the door of her classroom, holding a bag in which she would collect weapons brought in by her students. She was determined to do something to make things better for her students.
One of Faye’s finest traits is her genuine belief that people, especially kids, want to be “good.” Guided by her strong work ethic and positive mindset, “Ms. P” (as she’s come to be known), refused to give up on her students. |
During the 25 years of teaching that followed, Palmerton remained a strong advocate for young students and their families. Faye focused on how her students could be successful learners and find personal success. She sought the help of Roy Pittman, a very successful and highly regarded high school wrestling coach, known for his strong motivational skills. Together, they worked with the students on their self-esteem, and this proved to be a perfect way to reach the hearts of the youth.
When Ms. P’s students took their annual achievement tests that fall, people were astounded. Faye’s students achieved nearly perfect scores. Her methodology got such great results, Portland Public Schools and the Park Bureau approached Faye and Roy with the idea of funding a summer program to provide learning skill development to more students in the greater North Portland community. Those discussions lead to the beginning of TLC TNT and its first summer program. Thirty-one years later, the program continues to change lives throughout the city.
Inspired by an unwavering loyalty to children's well-being, Palmerton believes in the power of education to make life changing differences for people, no matter their circumstances. She is dedicated to encouraging students to strive for excellence in their educational endeavors.
