TLC TNT was founded in 1986 in efforts to alleviate the gang activity in North Portland and provide alternative decisions for minority students dropping out of school and engaging in negative community behaviors. Our dropout prevention method is rooted in our mentoring programs.
How it Works:
  • High school students join and are taught leadership skills
  • They are trained to become peer mentor counselors for summer day camp children
  • Peer mentors provide support, guidance, conflict resolution, and model responsible behavior for the day camp experience
The Results:
  • The exchange between the peer mentors and the campers is what brings success, encouragement, and joy to everyone who attends TLC-TnT
  • The peer mentor experience for high school students brings a sense of belonging in their community, especially seeing the positive results it brings to the campers and their families

92% students who are involved in our program stay in high school, graduate, and then go on to college.

Throughout the Year:
  • The mentoring program continues beyond summer camp by helping support the peer mentors in staying actively engaged in their communities and schools
  • We establish accountability in all our peer mentors by having monthly team meetings where we get together to plan & execute:
    • Community outreach activities
    • Fundraising for the program
    • Scholarship seminars
    • Camp meetings
    • Leadership development training
