They began by meeting with John Canda & walking with his "Connected" group on Friday nights. They planned parties such as an ice cream social for the Charles Jordan Center loaves & Fishes seniors, and gave away books at Peninsula Parks 100 yr. anniversary.
We were given some funding for an extra week of camp and they planned it for middle and high school students to do community outreach. Since there were twenty new peer mentors this was a good way for the 14 returning peer mentors to continue to train them to work at the next three weeks of camp with younger campers. They had a party for the seniors at loaves & fishes, visited parks & gave away more books (1,500 this summer), made packets of crafts for the little ones coming to camp, and visited the field trip sites. The peer mentors speak a combination of six different languages and that enables us to serve a diverse population.
360 children attended four weeks of camp. We sang songs, went on field trips, had visits from the fire and police departments & Lloyd Center Security, made pizza at Dominos, ate ice cream at Burgerville, read books & took them home, did crafts & visited the zoo(the last week we took 109 campers to the zoo!!)
After the party for the peer mentors to celebrate another year of summer camps I began getting texts from the peer mentors. “Thanks for helping us become a TLC family,” “When can we come over?” “What’s the next event?” “I know now how good it feels to belong to a group that gives back to the community.” And folks wonder how long the program will go on. Well, just ask the peer mentors!
We could not have done all of this without the support of the peer mentor counselors and your contribution. Thanks for another wonderful year!
